Description
NOTE:Studio l
ighting for photos makes this piece appear more honey-colored than it looks under usual indoor lighting.
Its translucence is obvious but colors are more subdued.
See second photo to get a better sense of indoor color tones.
Main photo was taken in sunlight which really shows off the caramel and honey stone.
Offering a Chinese carved hardstone shallow bowl, translucent agate, ovoid, footed, and featuring mythical pig dragons (
zhūlóng
) on four sides (two serving as handles).
Exceptional archaistic artistry.
The pig dragon figure derives from the neolithic Hongshan culture (4500-3000 BCE), associated with fertility and prosperity.
Caramel-colored agate is found in that same region of present day northeast China, Mongolia and the Liaoning Province.
